10 Stupid Mistakes

I think these 10 Stupid Mistakes Made by the Newly Self-Employed probably apply to all of our careers.

This bit on value creation is a gem:

It’s easy to fall into the trap of thinking that the purpose of a business is to make money. But the real purpose of a business is to create value. While it’s possible to make money in the short run without creating much value, in the long run it’s unsustainable. Even criminal organizations have to create value for someone. When you know your business is just sucking value away from others without providing anything in return, it will erode your self-esteem, and the business won’t be much fun to run.

Why does your business exist? It exists to provide some sort of value, both for you and your customers. The better you understand what value you’re trying to provide, the better you’ll be able to focus.

Creating value, not accounts receivable, is what business is all about.

Yes! Starting my own business was originally about creating something of value for myself. I wanted to do something I truly loved (the idea of not having to be anyone's biatch was also a draw). Now that it's been established, I realize the true value comes from providing something that others want and need (i am now everyone's biatch). After all the work, nothing is more rewarding or validating than the thanks I get daily for the service I bring my clients and employees. Ofcourse my CFO would disagree, but he has no soul. :)

Thanks Marc for creating a business that helps people.
