“It’s an industry where you help people on Monday…”
I’m taking my career advice to a new format, folks. I’ve been writing this newsletter to you for the past eight years, and now we’ve decided to take it to the streets! So I hopped in the back of a New York City taxi and dispensed career advice to professionals like you across the boulevards of southern Manhattan. We’ve filmed the results and I’m pleased to share with you… “CareerCab”! Here’s the first episode, in which Megan needs help with her elevator pitch: Too often, when we’re asked about our career or job search goals, we fall into fancy, memorized language. You know what I’m talking about — the big words that sound like they belong in a European sports car commercial — I’m endeavoring to apply my expertise in leveraging global synergies to deliver world-class customer communications platforms to our multi-national customer base with fahrvergnügen and quattroporte. Somehow, we’ve [...]

May I ask you a question?
If I told you that answering a few questions could get you 160% more contact from HR people, hiring managers and recruiters on TheLadders, would you be interested in answering questions like these? “What type of company would you like to work at for your next job?” “Would you like to manage people as part of your next job?” Or… “What size company do you prefer?” You’ll find these questions, and others like them, on TheLadders.com website. You should feel free to answer as many, or as few, as you like. Of course, the more you tell us, the more we’ll know. And the more we’ll be able to help HR people, hiring managers and recruiters zero in on the types of jobs and opportunities that you’d like to hear about. And when we are able to give better information about the jobs you’re interested in, you’re 160% more likely [...]

Do your colleagues know?
A few weeks ago, you got very angry with the comment “privacy is for old people” when I shared with you the story behind the LinkedIn founder that felt that way. So we asked you for your opinions on privacy and we are announcing the results today. If you’d read the outrage from your fellow subscribers on my blog a few weeks ago, it’s no surprise to you that privacy is very important to people. In fact, nine out of ten American adults say it’s important to maintain privacy when looking for a job. What might surprise you is the age group that found privacy most important. It was 25- to 34-year-olds who answered, 92% of the time, that privacy and confidentiality were important or very important in their job search. Despite the popular image of young professionals Facebooking foolishly and Twittering like, well… twits, it turns out that privacy [...]

Theirs a problem with youre e-mail
I hate to start out a Monday morning with glaring spelling mistakes in a subject line like you see above, so instead I’ll thank you for all the wonderful comments on last week’s post “It’s not about me, it’s about you… the 20 questions you need to ask in a job interview” such as this one from “Liz”: I have to thank you! I had an interview yesterday and it went great. When I asked about his leadership style and reward system his face lit up like a Christmas tree. After he answered the question “how can I help you receive your next promotion” he began to give me advice on how I should negotiate for a higher starting salary. Well thank you very much Liz for the kind words and for making me feel useful by putting my advice to work for you! Now over the past few weeks, [...]

It’s not about me, it’s about you… the 20 questions you need to ask in a job interview
What’s an interview about? It sure feels like it’s about you, but it’s really not. An interview is actually about how you can help your future boss and future employer succeed. It’s about finding out what their requirements and hopes are and matching up your background and experience with what they need. Overlooking these basic facts about the interview is all too easy. There’s so much else going on in your work, your life, and in your job search, that you can forget to look at the interview from the interviewer’s point of view. And that’s a shame, because, after all, you need the interviewer to walk away from the interview thoroughly impressed. With that in mind, I’ve updated my collection of my twenty best interview questions below. My aim here is to arm you with easy-to-ask, revealing-to-answer questions for you to take with you into an interview. Asking these [...]

Tomorrow’s future: 2001
I’d put a reminder in my calendar in 2001 to open this and read it in 2011 to see if the amazing future we were living in at that time still seemed futuristic ten years later. I’ll let you decide for yourself — remember, all of these wondrous items indicated what a crazy, modern world 2001 was: EVIDENCE YOU LIVE IN THE YEAR 2001 1. You just tried to enter your password on the microwave. 2. You have a list of 15 phone numbers to reach your family of three. 3. You call your son’s beeper to let him know it’s time to eat. He e-mails you back from his bedroom, “What’s for dinner?” 4. You chat several times a day with a stranger from South Africa but you haven’t spoken with your next-door neighbor yet this year. 5. Your grandmother asks you to send her a JPEG file of [...]

Oh no… are you re-re-re-re-re-re-re-writing your resume? Again?
Not feeling confident about your resume leads to a lot of wasted days like these: Writing your resume. Saving it. Worrying about it later at the ballpark. Going home, re-writing it. Getting nervous about your resume while you’re at your daughter’s soccer game. Going home, re-re-writing it. Feeling confident about the way you described that internal promotion a decade ago. Sharing your confidence with your friends. Discovering that none of them agree. Going home and re-re-re-writing it. Printing it on kinda fancy paper. Taking it to an interview. Discovering with horror that you’ve written “form” when you meant “from” (spell-check doesn’t catch goofs like that). Going home and re-re-re-re-writing your resume. Feeling like perhaps you ought to explain a bit more about your college activities because maybe your time as club Vice President really is a bit more indicative of your leadership capabilities. Re-re-re-re-re-writing your resume. Discovering, three hours later, [...]

Privacy is for old people says LinkedIn founder
Meet Reid Hoffman, the billionaire founder of LinkedIn. In this video, he shares with an audience at Davos his opinion about your privacy concerns: Yep, I think it’s just as unbelievable as you do — the founder of LinkedIn, the largest social network for professional people in the world says “all these concerns about privacy tend to be old people issues.” “Old people” issues? Are you even allowed to say something like that these days? And that’s how the founder of LinkedIn feels about your privacy? Well, I can’t speak for every internet company founder, but I can tell you that most of us think privacy issues are very, very important, and that Reid’s viewpoint does not represent internet executives as a whole. Those of us in the job industry have a special duty and responsibility to treat your privacy with care, because privacy issues are especially important in the [...]
