Bye-bye!

We’re expanding, and today we say “bye bye” to helping only those over $100,000 and “hello” to helping all career-minded professionals. TheLadders now takes all salary levels and shows the right jobs to the right person. So while we’re saying goodbye to our narrower segmentation, we are not saying “goodbye” to keeping your job search on TheLadders relevant, focused, and targeted.

So, for example, you won’t see jobs that pay half (or double) what you’re currently making. You won’t see jobs outside of your field — we still won’t show sales jobs to finance professionals, or marketing jobs to technologists. And we won’t be letting in scammy jobs, work-from-home schemes, or commission-only opportunities — we’ll still be vetting every job and every recruiter before we allow them into our community.

So what’s the big change for you? Should be not too much… on the surface.

You’ll still be seeing great $100K+ jobs, and the recruiters who post them.

Behind the scenes, though, by making it easier for companies and recruiters to fill all of their professional jobs at TheLadders, you’ll find that we’re getting more, and an even wider variety of, jobs at the right level for you.

We’ve been out talking to our friends in HR departments and recruiting shops across the country these past few months talking about our expansion and we’ve found widespread enthusiasm and support. The standard ways of doing things are too expensive, too time-consuming, and too frustrating for them, too.

This expansion has been a long time in the making. From the beginning in 2003, when we set out to become the “Society of the Nation’s Top Talent” to our first appearance in the New York Times in 2007, we’ve talked about preparing for the day when we would expand to cover all professional jobs.

We’ve worked hard at becoming experts at modern recruiting. We’ve underwritten research at universities. We’ve spent over a million dollars re-writing the playbook for job search advice. We published our Amazon Top 100 best-seller: “You’re Better Than Your Job Search“. And we’ve studied the history of the job search through the past two centuries.

We also launched Signature, our historically unprecedented program that guarantees you a job offer — or your money back — when you follow our program of weekly or bi-weekly calls over six months.

And based on our expertise in understanding what employers want, we’ve built the largest resume writing service in the country.

It’s that excellence in helping job-seekers like you that has propelled us to become leaders in the business, and it’s one of the reasons why we’ve tripled the number of recruiters and HR professionals in our community this year alone.

And so now that we’ve grown to almost five million members in the United States and 43% of high-end professionals used TheLadders in their job search last year, we’re expanding to serve all career-minded professionals and all professional jobs in the country.

I thank you for your support these last eight years and look forward to eight, or eighteen, or eighty more years helping you succeed in the job hunt!

You already had a ton of jobs that were less than 100K at 100% of target comp getting by your screeners.  It is only going to get worse with this new move.  I see no reason to pay for your services if you aren't screening out the jobs that are less than $100K at plan.  I don't want your high priced resume service.  I just want to know that the jobs that are on the site are valid $100K plus opportunities.  I don't believe you can be credible by eliminating the bottom.  There is too much wiggle room for recruiters to maneuver and try to recruit above the paygrade for the opportunity they have on the table.

    Marc,

    Interesting move.

Based on the defensive nature of the post, you were expecting a pretty strong backlash.  It's been frustrating being denied by multiple HR professionals over the last 8 years because your organization was not a one stop shop for all their positions.   You've invested a lot of energy creating a niche brand among the other generic job search sites but you've been constantly brainstorming ideas to grow your top line.

What % of your income comes from the monthly subscriptions of all the people complaining?  What % comes from candidate placements?  It's obvious you are catering to your real customer, the HR director, and not to the desperate job seeker that has made $100K in a previous role in a better economy.

    Good luck in your quest…

I have to say it is sad to see that you are joining the ranks of Monster and CareerBuilder.  What differentiated you was the fact I didn't have to shift through tons of garbage to find the positions that were fit for me.

As I see from so many here, not too many like the move.  I get it from your standpoint as it expands your revenue base.  I would suspect you will need to adjust your fees as you will definitely be outpricing yourself from the other generic sites that you are quickly becoming.

I hope from your standpoint it works.  For me, you lost a customer.  I had utilized you in the past and was concerning a move and about to sign up again.  But I see now real advantage here, even as you say that things will stay the same.  I just don't see how that is possible when you are being in the low hanging fruit to mix with your ripening ones.  Good luck on this move.  Hopefully it will work for you.  I know it doesn't for me.

While I may not be a recruiter or HR person. I was happy to know that I was in a elite group of  employees making 100K+ and that I had one good source – the ladders – to find 100K + jobs. Now  like the death of the middle class from corporate greed and gov't idiots, I am stuck looking in a paid website no better than indeeded, linkedin, or careerbuilder and monster.

This is a sad day and while I know company's need change to sustain business in a changing world, sometimes that changes isn't really needed when you have a top notch product.

I've already noticed a decline in posted jobs on the ladders and I'm not happy about it.  For example, since Tuesday I've done a generic search in the State of FL as a whole and used to see 20-30-40 + jobs a day.. yesterday there was 11, today 2 in all of FL.. REALLY !! Now I need to take more time to look on other sites for my next potential career move..

Does this change also mean a decrease in pricing for a membership? No sense in paying top dollar when the jobs are no longer top dollar..

No more fees that I will have to pay.  You jumped the shark.  What a greedy waste and a classless way to announce it.  I guess once you make your money and want more you forget about courtesy.  Bye Bye to you.

I love futuristic thinking and diversification. People losing their jobs due to the economic climate may not have the means to upgrade their knowledge, students leaving college may not have the experience the IT job market demands. This is an excellent way of expanding.

Great Launch of a new Ladders.com dimension…..it proved that NYC and all of the country knows the name now and knows how great it can work! How hopeful it is to all those customers who want to be a part of theladders “stepping up” to their needs too.

It is that time to offer this opportunity to others, and your unbeatable trained, caring
staff of employees.  Continue the brilliance you have always demonstrated in your past and future business growth.  And continue to care about getting all people jobs!  g.f.c.

Well, I've withholding comment since you made this annoucement, and how I have to agree that you have missed the mark.   I getting irrelevant jobs that are beneath my salary requirements and qualifications level.  When I was chatting on line with customer service, all they could say was that my settings were correct, and that I shouldn't be seeing the jobs I was seeing.  Never an I'm sorry.  And, Marc, when I emailed you directly, you don't respond.

Needless to say, I won't be renewing this subscription when I can get what you are now offering for free.

As you can see, your clients feel misled, mistreated and now, ignored.
